A working farm and game lodge nestled in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal — where nyala browse outside your door, kudu graze near the lodge, and the days slow to the rhythm of the land.
For generations, Koubad has been a place of arrival — for families, for travellers, and for those who simply need to remember what stillness feels like.
Koubad Farm & Game Lodge sits on a working farm in Paulpietersburg, KwaZulu-Natal — a region of rolling hills, indigenous bushveld, and quiet rivers. The land has been in the family for years, and we welcome guests into it the way we always have: with care, with story, with a fire ready to burn.
Whether you've come for a weekend, a family holiday, or to simply disappear from the world for a few days, you'll find Koubad to be a place that gives back what modern life takes away.

A hidden gem on the property — a quiet pocket beside a branch of the river where the water has carved natural pools into the rock. Pack a basket, swim in fresh water, and spend the afternoon away from it all.
Cast a line in the river that runs through the property — peaceful, shaded, and perfectly suited for an unhurried morning or afternoon with rod in hand.

Put your vehicle and skills to the test on our network of bush trails. Suitable for novice and experienced drivers — bring your bakkie, pack a picnic, and head into the hills. Launching soon.
Coming SoonKZN’s avian diversity is exceptional — raptors, weavers, kingfishers, fish eagles and more across the property. We don’t currently have a dedicated guide, so bird-watching at Koubad is enjoyed solo. Bring your binoculars and explore at your own pace.
Koubad is home to a real cross-section of South African wildlife — some you'll spot on a game drive, others you'll see right outside your door at sunset.
Koubad is home to a resident herd of white rhino — survivors of a poaching ordeal that left a lasting mark on this farm. Today they are protected, monitored, and quietly thriving here. Encountering them on a game drive isn’t just a wildlife sighting — it’s a glimpse of conservation working against the odds. A privilege, in a country where rhino populations remain under constant threat.

Among our giraffe is a magnificent Kenyan bull — distinguishable by his deep, jagged chestnut markings and his commanding presence on the farm.
Towering, graceful, and a regular sight on game drives — giraffe at sunset against the KZN hills is one of Koubad’s signature experiences.

Leopards are the most elusive of Africa’s big cats — solitary, silent, and almost ghostlike. They’re occasionally spotted at Koubad on night drives, a moment guests remember for life.
Their presence is felt even when they’re not seen. A reminder that Koubad is a true wild African farm, not a fenced display.

The brown hyena is the rarest of all hyena species — found almost exclusively in southern Africa, with a shaggy coat and a quiet, solitary nature unlike its spotted cousin.
Occasionally encountered on night drives at Koubad. Misunderstood, secretive, and one of the more remarkable species you might stumble across after dark.

Koubad is home to several mature kudu bulls with magnificent spiralled horns — some among the finest you’ll see on a private farm in KZN.
The "grey ghost of the bushveld." Tall, graceful, and surprisingly elusive despite their size — keep your eyes peeled at dawn and dusk.

Nyala display some of the most striking sexual dimorphism in Africa — bulls are dark, shaggy, and twice the size of the elegant, chestnut-coloured ewes.
Step out of your suite at Koubad and you’ll often find a group of nyala ewes and their calves grazing nearby — one of the most magical welcomes a lodge can offer.

The white "blaze" on the blesbok’s face gives the species its name — bles is Afrikaans for blaze. They’re endemic to South Africa and once nearly disappeared, now thriving on private farms like Koubad.
Often seen in graceful herds across the open grasslands, particularly in the cooler hours of the day.

Blue wildebeest are one of Africa’s great migrators — and at Koubad you’ll find them grazing in herds across the open grasslands, often alongside zebra and impala.
Stoic, social, and surprisingly fast. Their distinctive curved horns and dark mane make them one of the most photographed species on the farm.

An impala can leap up to 3 metres into the air and cover 10 metres in a single bound — making them one of the most agile antelope species on the farm.
Always in numbers, always alert. The most commonly sighted antelope at Koubad — and a key indicator of a healthy bushveld ecosystem.

Despite looking like rodents, dassies are actually the closest living relatives of the elephant — and Koubad has designated rocky spots where you can watch dozens of them sunning themselves.
Sociable, sun-loving, and full of personality. Guests are welcome to join us at feeding time — one of the most charming experiences on the farm, particularly with children.

Our farm goats are usually the first to greet you as you drive into the accommodation area — curious, friendly, and full of character. They’ve become unofficial mascots of Koubad.
Don’t be surprised if a goat or two wanders past your suite during your stay. They’re part of what makes Koubad feel like a real working farm.

Brahman cattle were bred for the African heat — recognisable by their distinctive shoulder hump and long ears. They’re hardy, calm, and well-suited to life on a working KZN farm.
Our Brahman herd is central to Koubad’s identity. Best seen on a game drive — and a quiet sunset moment with the cattle in the distance is one of the simplest pleasures of a stay.

Warthogs kneel on their front legs to graze — and have been known to reverse into their burrows so their tusks face any approaching predator.
Often spotted trotting across the property in family groups, tails held high — one of the most charming and characterful sights at Koubad.
